Abstract

Purpose: The objective of this collection of writings is to present a reflective account of the author after attending ten sessions of communication courses in the context of personal and professional spheres.

Design/Methodology/Approach: The approach is based on three things. First, the author tells a first-person account of each session. This is interspersed with key conversations that the author was able to understand and link to his own thoughts and experiences. Second, the author uses the Gibbs reflective cycle (1988) to make a list of the most important things to remember. Third, the author uses Rolfe’s “So What?” model (2001) to show how the sessions’ reflections were descriptive, theory-building, and action-oriented. These models are shared in the end as exhibits.

Findings: As proposed by Mayfield, Mayfield, and Walker in their book Fundamental theories of Business Communication, the professor’s choice of sessions to address and discuss followed a typological pattern. Using a variety of communication theory lenses, this strategy gives a solid foundation for business research to scholars conducting study. Reflective journaling refines the interdependence of many communication theories utilized by the class in the final session in interdisciplinary business domains.

Practical Implications: The reflective account offers valuable insights on communication theories and marketing managers as they build and support the position of thought leadership.

Originality/Value: The importance of analyzing communication theories in organizational contexts is growing, yet there are few reflective studies that have done so, and the relevant academic domains pay little attention to one another. Using two well-established reflective frameworks, the study represents the first step into this intersecting subject.
